It should be no mystery that the Delonghi Super-Automatic Espresso Coffee Machine ECAM 44660B has made it to our no. 1 spot. However, before you go out and buy this machine, please bear in mind that there is a similar looking, almost identical machine that’s sold in white. The price varies slightly, though that one is called Eletta ECAM45.760.W.
Please keep in mind that there is also a model labeled ECAM44.620.S with the same specs and so this review will cover that model too. The only difference is that the Eletta Plus does not have a milk carafe, which means that it will not automatically spin cappuccinos and lattes.
One of the reasons why we fell in love with the Delonghi Super-Automatic Espresso Coffee Machine is the design. It is slick, stylish, and fits right in with just about any type of kitchen or office. That gadget like look is something many people will appreciate as it’s certainly a conversation starter. Though looks aren’t the only reason, we recommend this machine.
Fully Programmable: Arguably the most stand out feature of this super automatic machine is that you can program just about every aspect of the coffee making process. You can create and save your own process, which is then available at the touch of a button. Aspects like coffee and milk can be customized to your taste and saved to the memory of the machine. That way, you can replicate that perfect cup each time.
Auto Milk Texturing: The machine delivers perfectly textured cappuccinos and lattes. If you like milk based coffees, then the Eletta is an excellent choice. Unlike the dozens of other machines, we tested for this review; the resulting beverage was smooth, and well textured, which is proof that it delivers the best milk and cream frothing features.
A Removable Milk Container: You probably already guessed we are big fans of milk based coffee beverages and so the removable milk container or carafe is heaven sent. The entire chamber can be easily removed and stored in the fridge. So, no longer do you have to deal with god awful job of cleaning out the milk frother which has been contaminated with dated milk.
Configurable Grinding Option: How the coffee is ground affects its resulting quality. While Delonghi’s grinders have always been excellent, with this machine, you can choose from smooth to coarse. In between, there are thirteen settings, which means that there is a setting for everyone and one that meets the tastes of everyone’s taste buds.
Digital Display: We especially like the Eletta’s digital display, which, unlike others on the market, guides you through using the machine. You are provided with feedback about what you are doing directly via the LCD screen. So, seeing what you’ve selected is easier, as does showing if it is the right type of coffee, i.e. long or single or if you have chosen to get strong coffee.
The PrimaDonna S Evo Super Automatic Espresso machine is designed for those who are very passionate about their coffee. Yes! This is yet another De’Longhi Super Automatic coffee machine on our list and for good reason too. The skinny is that this machine makes barista-quality beverages!
The machine prepares great tasting coffee with touch button simplicity. It is quick and easy to use, thanks to the well laid out Drink menu on the LCD display. So, you get to choose from classic Italian Espresso to everyone’s favorite Latte Macchiato and regular espresso. In total, it can deliver fourteen different types of caffeine drinks. However, that’s not the only reason why this machine is one of our top picks.
Programmable Recipes: The PrimaDonna S enables you to add a personal touch to the coffee. So you can tailor your coffee exactly the way you like it and save the settings. You can also save settings for your wife, friends, etc.
Programmed Remotely: Another feature that we particularly like about the PrimaDonna S Evo is that it can be remotely programmed. The Coffee Link app allows you to create your own recipes directly on your smartphone and save it to the machine.
Aromatic Coffee: The first time we tried the machine, it was hard not to notice the aroma. This is possible because the machine compacts and doses the coffee to perfection. The temperature of the water also plays a major role in the quality of the resulting brew. The thermoblock system quickly heats the water to the ideal temperature for espresso, while at the same time the specially designed conical metal grinders are used to extract the best possible flavor and aroma. Plus it prevents any ground coffee residue from being left behind.
The LatteCrema Feature: The machine also comes with a feature called LatteCrema System. The device uses a special mixing feature that will automatically deliver a rich, long-lasting, and dense milk foam. It is similar to having a Barista at your home.
The Breville BES990BSSUSC Fully Automatic Espresso Machine is considered to be amongst the best super automatic machines out there. The way this machine is designed makes it ideal for both commercial and home use alike. That’s why it is the machine of choice for many café owners.
The star of this show is the coffee bean grinder capable of grinding fresh coffee beans. Not to mention the various grinding features that it has to offer. However, grinding is not the only trick up Breville’s sleeve for this machine.
Brews more than just espresso: Sure, it has the term ‘espresso’ associated with it, but that does not mean that it can’t brew great tasting cups of Americano, latte, and cappuccino. There is also an accompanying steam nozzle which helps fans of lattes and cappuccinos take control of how their favorite beverage’s looks and its texture.
Easy to use touch screen control panel: The touch screen allows you to quickly swipe through all the features and choose one for your favorite drink. Once you choose a drink type, the machine will handle everything from grinding the beans to the right size to measuring its amount for your type of coffee. It will also tamp, pre-brew, and allow the coffee to bloom for the optimal period. The coffee is then brewed at the precise temperature required to get the most flavor out for your espresso.
PID Technology: The PID technology used helps to keep the water temperature within the machine at a certain range. While the Over Pressure Valve ensures that the water is delivered at the optimal pressure, in addition to this we in particular like the fact that the Oracle Touch uses a commercial grade portafilter and accompanying steam wand. That’s why it is often chosen by commercial establishments who want a fully automatic espresso machine that delivers great tasting coffee without having to hire a professional barista.
The DeLonghi Magnifica ESAM3300 has a small footprint but carries a large list of features and benefits. It is packed with more than enough power and features required to deliver great tasting, fresh cups of espresso.
Features like programmable settings, a one-touch foam system, and burr grinder aren’t just convenient, but they save time too. The generously large 60-ounce water reservoir means that it does not need to be refilled frequently.
Not to mention that all of these features are available for under a grand and yet it still comes with DeLonghi’s auto or self-cleaning feature. You know when to clean it when the decalcification indicator turns on. The drip tray and coffee bin are removable, both of which are easily washable. However, there is more to this super automatic espresso machine as we explore its most important features below.
Compactly Designed with Excellent Performance: The DeLonghi Magnifica belongs to an exclusive brew group of machines. The machine is compact, well designed and distributes heat perfectly to ensure that the resulting espresso is delivered piping hot.
Use of a Double Thermoblock: The machine is designed with a stainless steel thermoblock built inside the machine. The use of stainless-steel means that it is easy to clean the thermoblock. That said in our experience you'd want to descale it at least once every two months to get rid of all the mineral deposits. The other good news is that descaling is very easy to do, and it is something that’s been outlined in the accompanying manual. We tried descaling / cleaning it for this review and found that it took around 5 minutes to complete. That’s thanks in part to the fact that many parts are easily removable.
Quick Reheat Feature: Now, this is one of those features that will save you a great deal of time. The feature works by quickly heating the core to ensure that the coffee and machine, in general, is always at that ideal temperature required to produce great espresso. Regardless of the interval between the cups of espresso, you can be assured of ideally hot and fresh espresso.
Removable Bean Container and Water Tank: Counter space in many homes like ours is at a premium. Unlike with all the other super-automatic espresso machines we’ve reviewed, this is the only one that allows you to empty and fill the water tank as well as the coffee grounds without removing or moving the machine. Having all the controls on the front also makes turning on/off the cappuccino system easier. Moreover, there is no need to reach behind, under, or on top of the machine. If anything it’s ergonomically designed for most people.
Built-in Burr Grinder: The Magnifica also has a space saver container for all the coffee beans integrated into the machine. So, that essentially means that you can set the grinding level, which consequently results in espresso that’s customized to your taste. Not to mention the fact that we tried the machine with ground coffee, and it works perfectly. We are always in favor of having more options, and this machine allows you to do just that.
The Front Panel: One of the ways in which owners can customize the way they drink coffee is to adjust the quantity of water and also the amount of ground coffee. Tweaking these settings allows you to extract short, long, strong, or weak espresso. All of this tweaking is made easier thanks to the easy to understand front panel.
The Cappuccino System: The DeLonghi Magnifica uses a patented cappuccino system that works by rotating 180 degrees allowing for a milk container of any size. During our testing, we found that this system works perfectly. However, here too, there is a limit to the size of the container, but you can still use a much larger container as compared to other super automatic espresso machines.
New to the world of specialty coffee drinks? Have the money to spend but are looking for a machine that’s easy to use with single touch operation, convenient, lightweight and easy to customize so that your drinks turn out exactly the way you like it without being a pro Barista? Then the Saeco Incanto Carafe Super Automatic Espresso Machine or the Incanto HD8917/47 is for you.
It is a super espresso machine that offers many features and is a marvel of modern technology. While it is by no means perfect, it does offer a good balance of the pros outweighing the cons to be considered. Our review below goes into the most essential features that the machine has to offer or more like what makes it special.
Form Factor: The biggest issue we have with the majority of machines on the market today is that they look and feel like toys. Made from mainly ABS plastic does not mean they break easily, but it does mean that they aren’t as durable as ones made from metal. Now while this machine does use plastic in some places the most important parts like the front, and top are made from metal, i.e. brushed aluminum. The drip tray is also ruggedly made from stainless steel. The use of aluminum gives it a bit of heft and arguably permanence compared to the competition.
Aesthetically European: We are not sure if everyone loves Euro styling, but we do, and so it is a big plus for us. The timeless design, coupled with durability, makes it an excellent addition to most so-called “All American kitchens.”
Hefty Machine: Now this may be a drawback for people who need to move the machine a lot. Weighing 22.2 pounds isn’t exactly light. Plus, the comparatively larger dimensions mean you’ll need more room on your kitchen counter compared to what you’ll require for other super-automatic machines we’ve reviewed above. So, it is a con if counter space is at a premium, which is certainly the case for most people.
Water Reservoir Size: Most of us reading this article want to drink as much coffee as we can. Not to mention, regardless of how easy it is, refilling the water reservoir is a chore. The Incanto HD8917 has a pretty large reservoir which can hold an impressive 60.9 ounces, and it is top-loaded. It stores enough water to keep pace with your average coffee drinker and even a medium-sized household filled with casual drinkers. However, the water reservoir does have a trick up its sleeves, i.e. it can be fitted with a water filter, and they include one with the unit. But the filter is expensive, and so most people like us will be on the fence about using it as it increases the cost of ownership. The upside, though, is that it is easy to install.
Built-in Grinder: Phillips has outdone itself here with the Incanto’s grinder. The ceramic burr grinder has six settings and can grind up to 8.8 ounces. Plus, has a top loading hopper giving users total control over the brew, which is a reason why people choose super automatics. The use of ceramic is a good decision because most stainless steel grinders at least in our experience tend to heat up and eventually burn the grounds, consequently ruining the flavor of the resulting drink. The size of the bean hopper is in proportion to the water tank. Competing companies and brands often get the size incorrect, which leads to all types of issues. The one issue we had is finding the right grind setting for the drink we wanted. So, we had to play around with the machine to find what worked best for us. Other than that we had no other issue.
The Boiler System: The Saeco Incanto uses what is called the double boiler system. While having two boilers does add to the price people pay, it is also convenient since it allows for brewing, and milk steaming at the same time. That way you don’t have to wait a few minutes for the boiler to go into steam mode from brew mode. Both the boilers are made from aluminum but lined with stainless steel. Also, according to the company, both boilers use the same thermoblock technology, which means rapid heating.
A Telescoping Coffee Spigot: The telescoping spigot is very useful, but most people may not notice this until they start using the machine. The first reason why we love it is that you can adjust the height to make room for different cup sizes. You can choose from 2.5” up to 6” size cups. Another reason why this is a great addition to the machine is that the spigot can be pulled down until it is placed just above the cup. That way you get much more crema on top of the drink.
The Brew Unit: This is where all the magic happens. Many brands of super-automatic espresso machines use a fixed brew unit so it can’t be cleaned. The only way to clean it is to use cleansing tablets and then open out the machine to brush it. Fortunately, the Saeco Incanto saves you from all of that. Release the safety catch, then pull it out, after which you can give it a rinse. To us, that’s quick, easy and more thorough.
The Control Panel: The control panel consists of an LCD on the front of the machine and several small buttons on both sides. The technology works perfectly because using it; people can easily navigate through the complex menu system easily. Everything about it is intuitive, so you’re not going to have any problems navigating. Also programming the auto-start and shutoff times are easy making automated maintenance comparatively easy too.
The Milk Frothing System: Our review of this machine wouldn’t be complete without talking about the milk frothing or auto frothing feature. To the espresso purist, it would be a drawback or a con because they would instead prefer the steam wand. However, people who care only about the quality of the coffee and have no interest in becoming professional baristas will appreciate Phillips’ approach. At the heart of it, all is a plastic carafe that’s of all things dishwasher safe and can be easily stored in the fridge. When you want to use, pour in some milk and place it into the slot. Though it does not give you granular control over the frothing process, it does ensure good quality foam.Cup Warming Tray: Finally, the machine has an excellent cup warming tray which ensures that your cup is primed for the piping hot beverage that the machine produces.
Buying a super automatic espresso machine isn’t for espresso purists. It is for people who want café quality espresso and don’t have the time, will, nor the patience to tweak their brews. However, as a pro tip for everyone buying a super espresso machine is never to use oily beans. Oily beans clog the grinder so for best results you’ll want to use medium roast beans. Stick with that unless stated otherwise in the user’s manual.
