What is Espresso Roast Coffee?

Explaining What Really is Espresso Roast Coffee

Espresso roast coffee is a dark roast coffee and is much darker than other roasts because the roasting process is much shorter to avoid over-roasted flavors. So much less moisture remains in the bean after roasting due to water's boiling point - just below the temperature at which we roast coffee. Roasters try to hit a sweet spot around 464°F for espresso yumminess.

This results in more caffeine per cup since chemical changes during roasting make it easier for your body to absorb. A regular cup of good coffee contains 95-165mg of caffeine per 5 ounces, whereas an espresso has 75-125mg per 1.5 ounces. So, you get more caffeine in a smaller amount of liquid with espresso than regular drip-brewed coffee or even instant coffee that is already strong and full-bodied.

Espresso is not necessarily stronger than any other good coffee, but it can be due to the higher caffeine content. This is not always the case, though, as espresso can be diluted if too much water is used. The flavor of an espresso roast can vary greatly depending on how long you roast it. It will have a smokier, more intense flavor if roasted longer. If it is not roasted enough, its flavor will be more neutral and stale. Some people find that espresso roasting offers both strength and rich tones without bitterness.

Is Espresso Roast Coffee Healthier than Other Roast coffee?

Espresso roast may be more healthy than other roasts because the lighter roasts are less processed and retain more nutrients, similar to green vs. black tea or white vs. brown rice. However, all of the different types of coffee still have their own set of unique health benefits. Some research on coffee indicates that its health benefits include:

  • Antioxidant effects
  • Positive impacts on metabolism and blood sugar control
  • Improved cognitive function
  • Lower risk of depression

Espresso coffee may also protect against type 2 diabetes, liver diseases such as cirrhosis or cancer. The antioxidants in coffee are known to reduce free radicals in the body, damaging cells and contributing to chronic diseases, such as cancer or heart disease. Coffee also contains minerals such as potassium, manganese, and magnesium, important for health.

Is Espresso Roast Coffee more Acidic than Other Roast Coffee?

Since dark roasts are roasted longer, they will be slightly more acidic than light roasts. However, the acidity in coffee is not all bad. The natural acids in coffee make it taste bitter, but these same acids have potentially good health benefits. Previous research suggests that the antioxidant effects in coffee can decrease inflammation and improve various aspects of metabolism, including blood sugar control which means that the acids in coffee may promote good health rather than harm it.

Espresso Roast is a dark roast that provides a good balance between strength and flavor, making it a popular choice among people who want strong flavored coffee but do not like the bitterness of some dark roasts such as French Roast. All of the different types of coffee still have their own set of unique health benefits, so there is no "best" coffee when it comes to nutrition. But if you want a flavorful cup with good health benefits, an espresso roast is a good choice.

Choosing the Best Espresso Beans for Breville Espresso Machine

Factors Used in Determining the Best Espresso Beans for Breville

When choosing the best espresso beans for a Breville Espresso machine there are several factors that you need to consider. Espresso machine manufacturers generally recommend using espresso coffee beans for Moka Pots or French Presses. The reason is that these machines have thicker percolators and do not extract the oils from the beans. Coffee lovers want their espresso machine to produce great-tasting espressos and cappuccinos, which is very difficult with low-quality beans.

Many flavors can be lost when over-extracting the espresso through a percolator and may not taste as good as you would hope for always. Below are the factors used in determining the best espresso beans for Breville machine:

  • The Coffee Grind

There are two different types of grinds for Espresso, Rancilio and Espresso. Espresso is finer, and Rancilio is more coarse. Most Breville machines are designed for the Espresso grind since it is easier to extract with less pressure, making better-tasting coffee. One important thing to note is that if you use a coarser grind, you will not make an espresso with your machine because you need at least 9 bars of pressure to produce espresso.

  • The Size of Espresso Pearls

This is another important factor when determining the best espresso beans for your Breville machine. A good rule of thumb is that the smaller the coffee pearls, the more surface area there will be, which will help in the extraction process and produce a better-tasting espresso. A larger grind will produce a thicker cream, which can help in producing a more robust bouquet of flavors from your coffee. There are many different opinions on the best size for espresso pearls. Still, some generalizations can be made when determining this factor for any Breville machine. Here are the three main sizes available for pearls and how they affect the outcome of your coffee drink.

  1. Smaller Pearls: Under 7/16 inches produces a thicker crema, more oils are extracted, and the espresso will taste stronger with this size.
  2. Larger Pearls: Over 7/16 inches. generally produce worse tasting espressos all around. Smaller coffee grounds get packed together and leave little room for extraction, leaving an under-extracted and bitter-tasting espresso.
  3. Best size: 5/16 inches is the ideal size for most Breville espresso machines and any other brand of coffee machines, whether it's an Espresso Rancilio or Moka Pot. The smaller size will produce a thicker cream, and more oils are extracted, and the espresso will taste strong with this size.
  • Freshness of the Beans

The most important factor in determining the best espresso beans for your machine is freshly buying good-tasting coffee beans. Coffee starts losing its flavor as soon as it's roasted, so the freshness of the bean is very important when you want to make good-tasting espresso. When buying your coffee beans, a good rule of thumb is that they should be 100% Arabica, roasted within the last week, and bought at a reputable store like Wal-Mart, Amazon, or Trader Joe's, where you can trust they are fresh.

  • Preference of the Drinker

When determining the best espresso beans for your machine, you should take into consideration your personal preference. Some like their espresso strong and bitter, while others want it weaker and more smooth. Experiment with different beans until you find what is best for you! Some general guidelines when buying the best espresso beans for Breville machines include: if you like stronger coffee with a thicker crema, go with a smaller grind such as an Espresso Rancilio. If you like weaker coffee without much crema but want more oils from the coffee grounds to be extracted, use a larger grind such as a Moka Pot.

  • The Size of your Cups

When using your Breville espresso machine, you generally want to make between 1-2 shots of espresso, so when buying the best espresso beans for Breville machines, you should try and buy your coffee in bags that yield at least 2-4 shots. This will allow for enough beans in case you need a quick shot of espresso or if anyone in your home wants their cup of espresso.

Where to Buy Espresso Beans in the United States

If you want espresso beans right now, you can order them online, and they will be shipped right to your doorstep. That is right, ordering coffee online is not only easy, but it is also secure, and most importantly, it saves you time which you can use to do other things in your life.

When buying espresso beans on the Internet, keep in mind that just like you buy any food product, quality varies from one supplier to another, so ensure that you read reviews and check out what buyers think about the coffee beans. Also, there are some roasters you won't miss finding within your neighbourhood if you want some brews immediately! Here we shall look at some of the popular places to buy Espresso beans in the United States.

Georgetown Coffee - Seattle, WA

Georgetown's medium roasted "Signature Espresso" is one of most people’s absolute favourites. It has a beautiful milk chocolate aroma and a wonderful, almost syrupy mouthfeel. The flavor is slightly sweet with milk chocolate and lightly toasted marshmallows. Delicious! Georgetown's espresso blend is a combination of lighter roasted coffees. This blend has nuances of cedarwood, milk chocolate, orange zest and dark chocolate - very smooth with a touch of peppery spice on the finish. Their dark roast is also very good, deep, rich and smoky in flavor.

Black Oak Coffee Roasters - Sorrento Valley, CA (San Diego)

This great little roaster ships its espresso beans only within California. Their medium roast is sweet with nuances of milk chocolate and raspberry jam; nice acidity, full-body, and slightly smoky finish. These beans can be purchased in 1/2 lb and 1 lb bags. We have long been fans of Black Oak Coffee and feel they roast some of the best espresso beans in California. They may be known for their dark roasts, but we believe their medium is excellent as well!

Pasadena Espresso - Pasadena , CA ( Los Angeles )

This is a well known roastery that has been serving the Los Angeles area for many years. They offer whole bean and ground coffee, but only their "Italian Roast" is recommended for espresso. It is a dark roast with great flavor - very rich and smokey, sweet molasses notes with an earthy finish. These beans can be a bit "dirty" and can have some ash on them, so a good purge is recommended. This roaster only offers beans roasted within the last ten days for whole bean coffee, so it's best to grind these yourself just before use.

Bucks County Coffee Company - Newtown, PA (Philadelphia)

This roaster only sells whole bean coffee, as far as we know. Their espresso is a dark roast with big, rich flavors - milk chocolate and vanilla with a woody finish; full body and quite smooth. They are said to put their most popular dark roast, the Red Rooster Espresso blend, in a Clover , and they have been said to do it well. When using a home espresso machine with a double spout, this roaster gets very high marks from customers for taste and ease of use. Good stuff!

Kickshaw Trading Company - New York, NY (New York City)

This very small roaster is a real gem. They only sell their coffee online, and they sell out quickly when they have some available, so plan! All of their coffee is shade-grown, organic, and fairly traded. Their Espresso blend is a rich, dark roast with a full body; sweet chocolate syrup, cedarwood, and brown sugar balanced with an earthy finish. These beans are roasted just dark enough to bring out the complex flavors, but not so dark as to be completely bitter.

JJ Bean Coffee Roasters - Boca Raton, FL (South Florida)

This is a small to medium-sized roaster only distributed to shops in the South Florida area. Their traditional Italian-style espresso is smooth with nice acidity, flavors of dark chocolate, cedarwood, and brown sugar with a long smoky finish. These beans are roasted to a medium level and will be smooth and complex enough for most espresso drinkers. The price is unbeatable at $12 per pound which makes this one of the cheapest roasts we have found so far.

Buddy Brew Coffee - St. Petersburg, FLorida

This is a medium-sized roaster that distributes to shops and restaurants throughout Florida. While they offer whole bean and ground coffee for retail sale, their espresso blend is only wholesale. It is a dark roast with rich caramelized flavors; raspberry jam, dark roast coffee, and an underlying sweetness. This small roaster is a worker-owned co-op offering organic coffees whose origin is from many countries, such as Indonesia, Brazil etc.

Well, there you have it - an overview of some quality roasters in the United States.

The Best Espresso Beans for Crema: How to Make the Perfect Crema

Learn How to Make the Best Coffee Beans for Crema

Making crema is an art. Making a perfect crema is even more of an Art! The success of the "espresso italiano" largely depends on the quality of this aspect: no matter how good your machine is, if you cannot obtain a good crema, you will never obtain the taste and aroma expected from Cafe Italiano.

The reason why it is so hard to make a perfect crema lies in the use of over-roasted and decomposed beans. What you want is an espresso with a thin layer of homogeneous brownish/yellow foam on top.

A good crema brings out the oil contained in the coffee, making the "Caffe Italiano" rich, mellow and enjoyable. If you can read this article, then it means that your last attempt at making crema was not successful. You have either got a bad machine or bad quality coffee. To make the perfect crema you will not only need the best espresso beans for crema but also other factors should be considered as we shall discuss below in this article.

  • Coffee Amount

Use two spoons of coffee per single espresso cup (the classic one). If you are using a double boiler machine, use twice that amount. You can also use more coffee. If you are using a pump machine- the kind of machine used in Italy for making crema- use three spoons per cup, never less than that.

  • Type of beans

Only consider Arabica beans. They are the only ones able to produce crema. Never use Robusta for making an Italian "Caffe'. The best coffee beans are always 100% Arabica.

  • Roasting

You have to use freshly roasted coffee to get a good Crema. This is not just a matter of convenience but also a way to get good crema. Arabica beans lose their full flavour immediately after roasting. Therefore, using pre-roasted coffee will never make you obtain a proper Crema. Always check the expiration date on your bag (3 months after the roasting date), and only buy what you will use in a month or two. If you possess pre-roasted beans, keep them in an airtight container no longer than two months, and make sure they are not exposed to humidity during storage.

  • Grind

The grinder is one of the most important factors required to get crema. Never use a whiling grinder. There is no way you can obtain a good Crema with such a machine. The best espresso beans for crema are ground in the right size to enhance the taste and aroma of "Caffe' Italiano". If you do not have an espresso grinder, buy your coffee already grounded at your local supermarket or coffee shop. Never use the whiling grinder available on your espresso machine: it is not designed to grind coffee beans for making cafe lattes.

  • The Filtering Process

Another important factor for a good Crema. You have to use a proper filter system to brew your coffee properly and enhance the taste and aroma of your coffee. Always use a proper filter system such as a Moka pot, filtered espresso or pump machine. Cheap and whiling filtering systems will never make the crema you desire: they may take longer to brew your coffee, but they will never be rich and mellow.

  • Water

Use only tap water for making crema or filtered water. Bottled water will never make you able to obtain good crema. If your tap water is bad, buy a filter jug or use bottled water.

Get Italy into your home (and your espresso machine)! With this fresh roasted beans, you will smell and taste a beautiful brew.
